Suspect surrenders after 3 1/2-hour South Kitsap standoff

SOUTH KITSAP – A 48-year-old man was arrested by Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office deputies early in the morning on April 23 after a three and one-half hour standoff in which he had brandished a handgun and threatened two people.

The two people, who were inside a residence in the 4500 block of Mayvolt Road SE in Port Orchard, escaped; one person exited out of a window and the other fled on foot, sheriff’s deputies reported.

After a 911 call was received by the sheriff’s office, patrol deputies and members of the Kitsap Regional SWAT team surrounded the house, with assistance from the Port Orchard Police. Negotiators were enlisted at the site after the man failed to respond to officers. After obtaining a court-ordered search warrant, deputies and SWAT officers convinced the suspect to surrender peacefully.

The suspect was booked into the Kitsap County Correctional Facility for third-degree assault. Officers from the Bremerton Police Department and South Kitsap Fire and Rescue units also responded to the call.
