“SUQUAMISH – Tickets are still available for the Suquamish Tribe’s Native New Year celebration scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today at the Tribal Center. The event, which features native dance and a salmon dinner, celebrates the changing of the seasons, said Peg Deam, the Suquamish Tribe’s cultural specialist. Tickets for the event are $15 for adults and $7 for children ages 12 and under. Native story teller Tina Jackson, a prize lottery and the newly revived Animals Walking dance will be part of the night’s presentation. Money raised from the event will go toward the Suquamish Traditional Dance Group. The dance group was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1999 and its mission, Deam said, is to preserve Suquamish songs and dances. The songs are performed in the Native Lushootseed language and regalia is made from cedar bark, shells and wool. The money raised will go toward a canoe journey scheduled for this year to Squamish, British Columbia. The group also plans to build a longhouse to house the traditional Suquamish songs and dances for future generations. “
