A man’s apartment and his belongings were destroyed in a fire in Suquamish Feb. 4.
The Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office believes the fire started after an oil-filled radiant heater was left operating in close proximity to clothing and other combustibles in the accessory dwelling unit, per a North Kitsap Fire & Rescue news release. The property owner is insured but the tenant — who was not home at the time — didn’t have renter’s insurance.
Firefighters from NKF&R, along with the Poulsbo and Bainbridge Island fire departments, were called to the Geneva Street address at about 1:07 a.m. after a Suquamish police officer spotted flames coming from the ADU over a home’s garage, per the release.
Police notified occupants of nearby residences about the fire. Two occupants were also assisted with their evacuation from an adjacent home. Due to the ADU’s unusual construction and large volume of combustible materials in and around the building, it took more than 30 minutes to put out the fire, NKF&R says.
