Port Orchard’s Revival Boutique is once again spreading holiday cheer by organizing this year’s Adopt a Grandparent program.
After the overwhelming success its first year, the boutique’s owner, Samantha Smith, is inviting the community to help ensure no senior feels forgotten this holiday season.
“This program is especially meaningful for seniors in our community who may not have family or friends visiting them during the holidays,” Smith says in a recent social media post. “Sadly, there are many who are alone or rarely see visitors, and we want to make sure they feel loved and remembered.”
The boutique is calling on people to participate by donating thoughtfully curated gift bags filled with items such as socks, puzzles, books or blankets. Participants can pick up pre-packaged bags from Revival Boutique or use their own gift packaging.
The program emphasizes the personal touch of a handwritten Christmas card accompanying each donation. “We want them to know they are not forgotten,” the post reads.
Asked how seniors are selected to receive gifts, Smith explained: “We drop them off at selected homes, and their staff chooses who gets them. The staff know which seniors have little to no family and also their needs.”
Last year, the program had an incredible response, with over 300 gifts collected. “Our community was and is very generous,” Smith said.
The inspiration for the program came from Smith’s personal experience. “My grandmother had Alzheimer’s, and when she was in a home, I noticed that many of the other residents did not have gifts and had no family visiting them. I asked staff and found out that this is very common. Sadly, sometimes when they are put into care, family visits less, and some have no family at all. It was then I decided to start Adopt a Grandparent.”
Community members have until Dec. 20 to drop off donations at Revival Boutique in downtown Port Orchard.
