BHS students host ‘Spring Fashion Show.’

Changing seasons bring new wardrobes and Madonna Hanna’s advanced fashion marketing class at Bremerton High School showed off the most hip spring and summer garments on Tuesday night, hosting the “Spring Fashion Show” at the Bremerton Performing Arts Center.

Inspired by a “City Safari” theme, Hanna’s models showcased hot fashion ranging from swimwear, to coats and jackets, to dresses, to clothes colored with the freshest spring color, “yellow.”

“It wasn’t quite the typical high school fashion show,” Hanna, a fashion guru herself, said of the show.

With seven clothing designs to show off — “safari”, “prints”, “yellow”, swimwear”, “coats and jackets”, “dresses” and “evening safaris” — the 28 models walked, danced and shook to music and the lively crowd.

“That’s the thing, to be entertaining,” Hanna said of the show’s atmosphere, keeping the audience on seat’s edge. “It was a great show.”

Even BHS Principal Aaron Leavell got into the action, making his runway debut to sport basketball attire, sports coats, a tuxedo and other fashionable flair.

“It was really good to see that Mr. Leavell was a part of the team,” Hanna said of the BHS head honcho, adding that she was impressed with his ability to coalesce with the group, looking like a natural on stage.

Macy’s furnished the garments, while the Tux Shop in Silverdale provided the tuxedoes.

“I just know plenty of people are going to shop,” Hanna said, referring to the Macy’s apparel sported at the show.

And while Hanna and the models were on stage and in the limelight, the event was made possible, too, by a handful of backstage hands — ticket sellers, hair and makeup assistants, dressing room assistants and ushers.

“We’d been planning since March,” Hanna said, pleased with the performance. “We had a wonderful turnout.”

An annual event, the Spring Fashion Show translates classroom planning into an entertaining evening.

“It was wonderful,” student Adria Harris said of the show. “I practiced and practiced.”

Praising Hanna’s leadership, Harris said the event came together because of her teacher’s wherewithal and knowledge of fashion.

“She’s the best. She knows what she’s talking about, so you don’t have to question her,” Harris said. “The reason I like her as a teacher is she tells us the truth about the working world.”

And in his fourth fashion show, senior Aaron Burns, who sported swimwear and a range of other goods, also walked away Tuesday night feeling good about the performance.

“It was a successful night,” he said.
