PORT ORCHARD — South Kitsap School District and the Bremerton School District have closed all of its schools for Monday following an overnight accumulation of snow in the region.
There will be no after-school events, preschool or special programs at South Kitsap schools, the district said in a community alert early in the morning.
The Bremerton district also stated its website and email network is down. School closure updates are to be posted on the district’s Facebook page for the time being.
Also closed on Monday is Olympic College, according to the informational network flashalert.net.
South Kitsap
The school district first issued an email notice Sunday night advising students and parents that schools would be open for classes two hours late on Monday morning due to accumulating snowfall. But additional snowfall overnight forced officials to close schools.
Weather forecasters advised area residents to expect snow accumulations of one or two inches, with some areas reaching up to three inches. Snowflakes began falling at mid-afternoon on Sunday.
Kitsap Transit
Effective at 9 a.m., the following service changes are planned, according to the public transportation system:
South Kitsap: All bus routes, which were suspended due to icy roads in the Port Orchard area, return to snow routes.
Central Kitsap: All bus routes return to normal route, except for routes 20, 24 and 26.
North Kitsap: All bus routes return to normal route, except for Kingston Ride (Fast Ferry Commuter, Mid-Day).
Bainbridge Island: All bus routes remain on snow routes.
South Kitsap bus routes 4, 5, 8, 9, 81, 85 and 86 have been taken out of service due to icy roads in the Port Orchard area, the agency reported Monday morning. Kitsap Transit said it hopes to restore bus service in the area “once road conditions are safer for operations.”
Fast Ferry canceled
Kitsap Transit, which operates the fast ferry system, said all sailings on the Bremerton and Kingston routes have been canceled due to high winds and sea conditions. Foot ferry service for Annapolis has been canceled due to icy conditions at the dock.
… but the Courthouse is open
The Kitsap County Courthouse and county offices, however, will operate on normal schedules Monday morning, according to a county inclement weather advisory.
