Small group brings ‘Occupy’ movement to Port Orchard

A group of half a dozen sign-waving demonstrators brought a little of the Occupy Wall Street buzz to Port Orchard on Friday.

Their presence at the intersection of Mile Hill Drive and Olney Avenue, where branches of Bank of America and Wells Fargo are on opposite sides of the street, drew supportive responses from passing cars, with drivers honking and people waving and giving thumbs-up gestures.

The small group was organized by Todd Penland, a Port Orchard man who said he’s been going to the recent Occupy Seattle demonstrations.

“I thought it’s be nice to bring it over here,” said Penland, whose father, Mike, was with the group demonstrating Friday afternoon. “Besides, I was getting tired riding the ferry over every day.”

The demonstrators said they plan to continue their presence in Port Orchard in the days ahead.
