Severe-weather shelters open; snow expected tonight

Baby, it’s cold outside. And it’s going to get colder, with snow likely late Dec. 5 in most of Kitsap.

South Kitsap School District buses were on snow routes as Dec. 5 dawned, and in Poulsbo crews were working to reopen Stottlemeyer Road NE between Gunderson and Lincoln roads, where trees had fallen onto power lines. The county’s Severe Weather Shelters will be open late Dec. 5 for those needing shelter from the extreme weather.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory, with a forecast of up to two inches of snow above 500 feet and less than one inch below 500 feet elevation. The weather service warns that driving conditions can be hazardous on higher hills, and recommends motorists be cautious while driving.

Expect high temperatures near 40, with south wind 3 to 6 mph, during the day. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. Rain and snow showers are likely tonight, becoming all snow after 11 p.m., with new snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Expect sunny skies and a high near 36 on Dec. 6 and 7. Rain and snow return on Dec. 8, turning to rain the rest of the week and weekend.
