Local author to speak about homelessness at fundraiser

Richard Lemieux, author of “Breakfast at Sally’s”, will deliver the keynote address at Benedict House’s second annual “Homelessness to Hope” fundraiser breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on April 25 at Summit Avenue Presbyterian Church, 403 S. Summit in Bremerton. A former well-to-do businessman, Lemieux lost his business, his family, his home and all his worldly possessions as his life spiraled downward into homelessness.

Benedict House, a program of Catholic Community Services, has provided emergency shelter and transitional residence, supportive services, and hope for a better future for up to 25 homeless men at a time, including one with children, since April 2006. About 72 percent of the residents, many of whom are veterans, move on to educational opportunities, employment, and permanent housing.

Reservations are required. The free breakfast is sponsored by the Suquamish Tribe, KPS Health Plans, Sound Grants and the Whisker Club. All guest contributions, which are tax deductible, will support operational costs of Benedict House.
