Poulsbo brewery makes beer for California wildfire relief efforts

Rainy Daze joins nationwide effort.

Rainy Daze Brewing is one of hundreds of breweries around the country that are assisting in relief efforts for the victims of California’s devastating Camp Fire.

About 450 breweries have signed up to brew the exact same beer, called Resilience Butte County Proud IPA, and the Poulsbo brewery is taking part. This Tuesday, workers brewed up about 236 gallons. The recipe and ingredients were provided by the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. All proceeds from the beer’s sale go to fire relief efforts.

“I think it’s just a really good cause in general,” Rainy Daze owner Mike Montoney said.

Assisting the brewers were people from the Poulsbo Fire Department, Puget Sound Federal Fire Department and the Navy.

Also at the event was former Poulsbo Fire Chief Jeff Griffin. He said he appreciated the opportunity to help out with the cause.

“What a grand idea to put all these brewers on the same case with the same recipe,“ Griffin said. “To sell it in their own tap houses and then give up the proceeds, that’s just huge. I know those communities are severely distressed, and they need everything they can get.”

The Poulsbo Fire Department was unable to spare any firefighters to battle the California blaze, firefighter Carl Johnson said, but contributing to the relief effort by volunteering his time was one small way that the group could provide some assistance to those affected by the fires.

Griffin said he also looked forward to being able to sample the fruits of his labor.

“It’s an honor to be involved in it, and I’m looking forward to having a couple of the beers when it’s all said and done.”
