Port Orchard churches celebrate 25th year of Good Friday Cross Walk

PORT ORCHARD — A number of Christian congregations in South Kitsap are coming together to again walk at the 25th Annual Port Orchard Good Friday Cross Walk on April 14.

The Good Friday Cross Walk is an alternative outdoor ecumenical Good Friday worship that has been part of the Port Orchard community for 25 years, according to event organizers.

First Luthern Community Church, Elim Lutheran Church, Spirit of Life Lutheran Church and St. Bede Episcopal Church and others from multiple faith communities in South Kitsap will be marking the special 25th observation of the local Good Friday tradition.

The Cross Walk is open to anyone from the community who wants to walk on Good Friday, a special day for Christians globally. According to the Rev. Sarah E. Roemer of Spirit of Life in Port Orchard, walkers process with and carry a large wooden cross through town.

“They give ‘face and feet to their faith’ while praying for the community overall and the people and the places they encounter on the walk,” Roemer said.

The walk begins at 10 a.m. on Good Friday from First Lutheran Community Church at 2483 Mitchell Road SE in Port Orchard. It will conclude around noon in downtown Port Orchard with a time of reflection and sharing, Roemer said.

The Cross Walk began 25 years ago with the hope by retired Pastor George Larson that “People get the feel of what Jesus’ cross could have felt like and that the whole experience of walking the cross out in public engages all our senses, reflections and recollections of what our faith means,” he said.

“This is a community event which people have repeatedly come to be a part of and experience for 25 years,” said Adrian Bonaro, pastor of First Lutheran Community Church. “It is a tradition that has served this test of time without changes and is still just as powerful for many as the first time they participated.”
