Visitors to Clayton Playground this week will find little more than a big mound of dirt and a Closed sign.

But don’t worry, kids. The mound will be gone soon. And in its place will be new toys.

City public works employees are preparing the park for four new pieces of playground equipment expected for installation in the coming weeks, said public works director Mark Dorsey.

The new toys — a swing set, a three-person bounce station called a “Spring Fling,” an 8-foot climbing wall and a spinning toy called a “Gyro Spinner” — will join the play set and the slide already in place at the park, city employee George Thompson said.

The city purchased the new toys in 2011, Dorsey said. The equipment was delivered in November and workers have been assembling the pieces in the public works department shop.

“We’re working on getting them in,” Thompson said. “We’re kind of limited on what we can get in with the weather.”

Dorsey said the city hopes to bring the toys to the Clayton Playground in the park in the next few weeks.

The installation requires a “lot of site prep” Thompson said. Public works employees removed all topsoil and are leveling out the site before the playground equipment goes in. After the pieces are cemented into the ground, a layer of synthetic, “fall safe” wood chips will be placed around the site.

Dorsey hopes a ribbon cutting ceremony for revamped Clayton Park will take place around Easter Weekend. And if everything works out well, the fence may come down a little sooner.

“The toys could probably be ready to play on in March,” Dorsey said.
