POULSBO — Many of his old customers know him simply as Phil, but after the first of the year, someone else will be making the house calls.
Since 1959, Phil Holt has serviced appliances throughout the North End as a repairman for Nilsen’s Appliance Center in downtown Poulsbo.
POULSBO — It appears Bellringer could be celebrating a very happy new year as it almost reached its $30,000 goal just after Christmas Day.
By 8 a.m. Monday, Bellringer had collected $3,020, which is an appreciative increase from its pre-holiday lull.
POULSBO — Lion Paulette Alvarado had made her lists and checked them twice and that was all before 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Alvarado and about a dozen other members of the Poulsbo Noon Lions Club met at Central Market to fill more than 30 Christmas baskets for needy families in the North End as part of the club’s Bellringer campaign.

SEATTLE — A rivalry is still a rivalry no matter where the game is played.
The Bainbridge boys basketball team crossed the Sound instead of the bridge and defeated the North Kitsap Vikings 64-44 at the Key Arena in Seattle on Dec. 19.
Bainbridge guard Steven Gray led all scorers with 29 points, shooting 6 for 7 in the second half for 14 points.

POULSBO — Those in need of Christmastime melodies were well appeased by the Northern Lights of North Kitsap High School this holiday season. The group picked up 20 holiday tunes and performed different sets at five venues this month.
Under the direction of 12-year NKHS choir director Sylvia Cauter, the all-female harmonic group started learning the Christmas songs in September. Members continued to work on right up until the eve of their final show — making for three full months of Christmas cheer.
POULSBO — Flexibility, finesse, strength and balance are all being fine tuned as the North Kitsap Lady Vikes spring into the 2006 gymnastics season with the team’s biggest turnout yet and a returning group of state-capable competitors.
Head coach Kris Goodfellow said the key for the Vikings has been the core of gymnasts returning from the 2004-05 squad, providing guidance through experience to the new crew.

Jill Camby, who works at the John L. Scott real estate office in Poulsbo, heard about the girl’s request and set out to make her dream come true.

POULSBO — The North Kitsap boys basketball roster is back to full capacity and the Vikes’ defense is secure, but as a team, energy is lacking.
The Vikings have yet to pick up a win this season.
PORT ORCHARD — Protesters against Kitsap County’s Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO) made an unsuccessful last-ditch effort to prevent its ratification on Monday, with several anti-CAO speakers using the public input segment of the county commissioners’ meeting to air their grievances.
The trees were still green and the days were long and warm when musician Peter Spencer first approached the Island Music Guild with the idea of recording a CD of holiday tunes, highlighting the many talented musicians in the guild.
“I always thought it would be great to make a Christmas album, but I didn’t have enough stuff on my own,†he said.
POULSBO — Bellringer might just find $30,000 underneath its tree Christmas morning as it nears its 2005 campaign goal. By 1 p.m. Monday, $4,797.93 was added to the fund, putting its ultimate goal in sight.
However, with the good news comes an added sense of urgency as the fund hasn’t reached its intended target quite yet.
POULSBO — As she prepares to hand over the governing reins to Councilwoman Kathryn Quade, Mayor Donna Jean Bruce need only to look to the north to see where it all began.
Bruce was first appointed to the council in 1988 and became mayor almost 10 years later when Mayor Mitch Mitchusson unexpectedly resigned after being re-elected in 1997.

Sometimes when I get an idea for a column based on a hot topic of the day, that topic has cooled by the time my column appears in print, a week later. So I’m selfishly glad to see that the debate over how to greet people in December has continued to rage unabated.
POULSBO — Raab Park took on a sweeter flavor Sunday as candy canes were hidden in the grass waiting for eager hunters to track them down.
With Mother Nature providing a healthy dose of winter sunshine, about 100 children and their parents wasted little time in finding their prey as all the Christmas delights were gone in a matter of minutes.
