POULSBO — The North Kitsap High School choir has hit the proverbial high note for this year’s National Association for Music Education’s All-Northwest competition, as five senior singers will head to the prestigious event.

“I’m very excited,” said NKHS choir teacher Sylvia Cauter. “It’s quite an honor for them to be singing with the top singers out of four states.”

The All-Northwest competition is a four day intensive session in which choir students, who are selected for their skills, work with some of the best instructors in the nation. It is also the first time that NKHS seniors Michael Hulst, Scott Shawcroft, Timothy Siburg, Kyle Friedman and Angela Brainerd have been selected for the President’s Day weekend event.

The five students — along with the rest of the school’s award-winning choir — will also be performing Friday at the annual “Jazz Night,” a concert and fund-raiser that benefits the NKHS senior cruise committee and choir program. Tickets for the event, which includes a silent auction, drinks, and dessert, are $20.

Jazz Night aside, the road to All-Northwest success is a storied one for all of the seniors.

Hulst has been singing in the NKHS choir for the duration of his high school career, first becoming involved in music through the Church of the Nazarene’s choir in Poulsbo.

He said his All-Northwest selection made him “more confident in his voice.” He has plans to continue singing and studying music when he begins to attend Christian Bible College this fall.

Shawcroft said his talents in music blossomed at Kingston Junior High School, where his repertoire included being involved in the band, choir and even local musical performances. He has continued his pursuits throughout high school and aside from his All-Northwest selection, will also have a starring role in the NKHS production of “Hello Dolly” this spring. He is leaning toward attending the University of Washington this fall and has plans to continue studying music.

Siburg, who said he’s been singing for years has been involved in the NKHS choir for all of high school as well as during his time at Poulsbo Junior High School. His first choir was at his church, First Lutheran, in Poulsbo. He said his post-high school plans will involve studying music as a minor and he named Pacific Lutheran University atop his list of places to study.

Friedman, who has been singing in organized choir groups since he was three, said he has plans to try out for “Soundsation” a jazz group based out of Edmonds Community College, where he plans to attend next year. He said he’s very excited to have a chance to work with Indiana-based renowned choral director Henry Leck, who will attend the All-Northwest sessions.
