Four Indianola residents and their dog managed to escape from a small residential fire Saturday morning.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue, Bainbridge Island Fire Department and Poulsbo Fire Department Crews were called to the home at about 7:35 a.m. Dec. 29

According to a press release from North Kitsap Fire & Rescue Spokesperson Michele Laboda, the blaze was attributed to an electrical short which caused an unused propane fireplace to activate, igniting adjacent combustibles which had been stored on the fireplace’s hearth.

While heat damage was contained to the area around the fireplace, the entire home sustained light smoke damage. The family was not displaced as a result of the fire and the homeowner is insured.
