BREMERTON — Sophomore Stephen Duwe scored a match-high 17 points and every Viking golfer improved scores from their previous match as the North Kitsap Vikings golf team narrowly defeated the Olympic Trojans, 50-47 Tuesday.

Rainy and windy conditions didn’t deter the Vikings, who rebounded from a 48-31 first-match loss to Shelton. Duwe improved by four points in the match, while Viking Evan Faulk improved the most in the match, going from a four point Shelton performance to a nine point score Tuesday.

Duwe was able to drive the ball down the fairway on every hole but one on the day, an aspect of his game that certainly helped to attain the high score. Two bogies on the final holes kept him from gaining additional points.

“The mechanics of his swing are pretty good,” said head coach Tom Harney. “He just needs to have confidence.”

In the match, Harney said he was impressed to see the improvement — elevating North to a narrow win.

“We’re such a young team this year and it was nice to get a victory,” Harney said. “The kids are working hard on their swings and their short game and it’s nice to see improvement.”

Boys’ golf eyes its next match at their home course of Port Ludlow, when they’ll face the Tides of Gig Harbor March 30.

“What we want to do with Gig Harbor is try and score personal bests,” Harney said. “Personal bests will give moral victory.”

There is still much to be done, Harney added. Improvements have to be made — both mentally and physically — in order for the team to be successful.

“They have to keep working on all aspects of their game,” Harney said. “Continue to work on the mental side of the game — making good strategies and decisions.”
