New owners keep family legacy going at Vern’s Topsoil

Business reopens after brief closure

After announcing its closure nearly two months ago, Vern’s Organic Topsoil in North Kitsap has reopened under the new ownership of Tanner Allen and his wife Samantha, keeping the company’s family legacy going.

Tanner is the son of previous owners Sam and Cathy Allen and the grandson of original owners Vern and Pat Martinson. The company is named after Vern, the company’s founder. The business was established in 1968 after originally serving as a milkhouse for the first few years.

“We are thrilled to continue on Vern & Pat’s, as well as Cathy & Sam’s, legacy,” Tanner and Samantha wrote in a Facebook post Feb. 1. “We have felt the outpouring of love from this community so deeply the past few years—with the passing of Vern, and the retirement of Cathy and Sam. We can only hope to serve the community as well as they have.”

Samantha said they are hiring for some positions. Vern’s is located at 22622 NE Bond Road.
