Navy to host spill response exercise at Manchester Fuel Depot

Fuel spill response exercise to begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday, April 26.

MANCHESTER — Along with federal, state, tribal and local agencies, the U.S. Navy will practice a fuel spill response exercise at Manchester Fuel Depot on Naval Base Kitsap-Manchester, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 26.

The Navy’s NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Puget Sound Fuel Department will lead the coordinated response to a simulated fuel spill in the vicinity of Orchard Point, according to NAVSUP’s office of corporate communications.

Although the public will not be affected by the exercise, nearby residents and commuters may see unusual activity and the presence of emergency vehicles in and around Manchester Fuel Depot. The Navy said that no impact on traffic or ferry commutes is anticipated.

The Navy routinely conducts response exercises to improve coordination, communication and collaboration with other government and tribal agencies during emergency situations. The communications office reported that practicing responses in various situations “enhances readiness among Navy installations to respond to actual emergencies,” the agency said in a news release.

The Manchester Fuel Depot, part of Naval Base Kitsap, is managed by the Navy’s fuel department. The fuel depot’s mission is to provide customers with top quality military specification fuel, lubricants and additives used by land, sea and air forces. The facility receives, manages and issues bulk petroleum products and is tasked with ensuring compliance of product quality, inventory control and environmental regulations.

Manchester Fuel Depot provides fuels support for U.S. and allied forces throughout the Puget Sound region and the Pacific Rim.
