Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor will be conducting spill response training on the Hood Canal Oct. 13-16. The public will see small work boats and spill containment boom on the water.

Federal regulations require the Navy’s Spill Management Team to participate in equipment deployment exercises twice a year that test the Navy’s ability to respond to and manage a spill from the facility.

This training requires responders to demonstrate command of a spill response and test oil recovery equipment and protective booming strategies to protect environmentally sensitive shoreline and habitat areas in Hood Canal.

These protective booming strategies are outlined in the state’s Geographic Response Plans, developed by trustee agencies, oil facility owners and response contractors, that identify and prioritize response strategies that best protect important areas (i.e. natural resources, water supply intakes, sensitive archeological or cultural sites, etc.).

The on-water portion of the drill will be conducted on the Hood Canal by NBK-Bangor on Oct. 15.
