Naval Base Kitsap is awarded the Chief of Naval Operations Environmental Award for Sustainability

SILVERDALE — Navy installations in the Puget Sound area received Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) environmental awards April 10.

The Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) got the CNO Environmental Award for Sustainability, Industrial Installation. The base incorporated environmentally sustainable programs for the construction of facilities used in the maintenance of Navy vessels.

NBK also reduced the amount of water and energy consumed by the installation, exceeding the Department of Defense’s performance metrics. Energy use for fiscal year 2017 was 34.9 percent below the fiscal year 2003 baseline. NBK’s 115 electric vehicles, representing 12 percent of the vehicle fleet, reduce the installation’s reliance on fossil fuels, lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

Through the use of high-efficiency LED light bulbs, NBK reduced energy consumption by 296 kilowatts at an annual savings of $54,530, officials said. The installation also reduced water consumption by more than 22 million gallons with an annual savings of $226,960 in fiscal year 2017.

“NBK team members and partner commands continue to implement innovative measures ensuring we are responsible environmental stewards,” said Capt. Alan Schrader, NBK’s commander.

“I am extremely proud of the work being done while maintaining a deep commitment to protecting our natural environment.”

Other bases in the Puget Sound region that received awards were Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Naval Station Everett and Navy Region, Northwest, Environmental Geographic Information System team.

“Our sailors, Marines and civilians work in diverse ecosystems while performing our national security mission,” said Rear Adm. Gary Mayes, commanding officer of Navy Region Northwest.

“Each awardee is to be commended for maintaining mission excellence while protecting the natural environment in which we operate.”
