Man charged in Bremerton stabbing

A Bremerton man has been arrested after police say he stabbed another man in a parking lot.

Twenty-five-year-old Doroteo Carillo Matias was charged with felony assault and harassment after he allegedly said “vas a morir, hoy,” or “today you are going to die” before stabbing someone in an incident on July 14 in front of El Campesino Tienda Mexicana in Bremerton.

According to charging documents filed July 25 in Kitsap County, a group of males “forcefully pulled” the victim from his pickup truck after he arrived with another man at the Hispanic foods market on the night of the incident.

According to a statement of probable cause, the victim “noticed some of the subjects” had “chains and knives.”

The victim and another man were first “punched and kicked,” the filing states, while the assailants chanted “Rojos’ — meaning ‘red’ in Spanish — and ‘18’ — possibly referring to the 18th Street gang — during the assault,” police said. A source told police that a local Norteno gang identifies with the color red, and “18th Street” is a rival.

The men “began to call out for “Doroteo,” the charging document states, “who the victim recognized as Doroteo Carillo Matias.

“As Carillo Matias walked up to” the victim, police said, “he said, ‘Vas a morir, hoy.’”

He “then swung the knife at [the victim’s] head,” the filing states. The victim “was able to raise his left arm to defend himself, which resulted in a cut to the tip of his left ear and stab wound to his left shoulder area, extending down his left bicep, cutting to the bone.

“When patrol arrived to the scene of the assault, large amounts of blood were found originating near the store,” police said.

Another man, Calmo Gomez, was also arrested on stabbing charges during the incident.

Bail for Carillo Matias was set at $500,000. The maximum penalty for assault in the first degree, a Class A felony, is up to life in prison and fines up to $50,000.
