Lots of stolen mail found in stolen car

We’ve all heard of mail theft from mailboxes, but this group goes right to the source – the U.S. Postal Service.

The Postal Service reported that 2,135 pieces of mail were stolen from 981 customers in Bremerton. And there was another heist at the post office in Port Orchard.

Inside a stolen vehicle located at the Point Casino & Hotel near Kingston, police found a stolen passport, 38 credit cards, 12 more credit cards for a store, 13 drivers licenses and identification cards, a stolen Glock 19 pistol, 53 nine-millimeter bullets and 66 stolen checks.

A man, and a woman inside the casino, had custody of the car. That woman, and still another man, ended up telling police Nov. 2 about the mail fraud and who was involved.

After an investigation, a 23-year-old Gig Harbor woman was arrested and charged with suspicion of second-degree robbery, second-degree burglary and theft of mail. Maximum penalty on each charge is 10 years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine. Bail to get out of the Kitsap jail is $70,000.

The other two have not been charged.

According to court papers, on Oct. 14 at about 6:30 a.m., the post office on National Avenue in Bremerton was burglarized. The three suspects drove up in a black SUV and stole mail from a covered loading dock area. That’s where all the mail was stolen from almost 1,000 customers.

At about 5:10 a.m. Oct. 17, a postal employee saw a man and a woman steal bags of mail from the Port Orchard Post Office on Bethel Avenue. When he tried to stop them he was threatened, so he backed off and called 911. He was able to describe the suspects to police.

On Oct. 19 in the Point Casino and Hotel parking lot around 7:17 p.m., Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe police spotted a stolen 2022 BMW out of Seattle. That’s where all of the other items were discovered.
