A Suquamish Indian Fisheries Department employee found a dog that had  been missing for several days in a ravine along Blackjack Creek.

The 17-year-old Golden Retriever, named Penny, was found Oct. 25 by John Oleyar. The dog had been missing for four days, according to owner M.J. McMuray.

McMuray said that she, Oleyar and her friend, Minde Conklin, went down the steep ravine to retrieve the dog while Eric Synder coordinated the rescue efforts from ground level.

Exhausted and disoriented, recovering from recent surgery and a stroke, Penny immediately received her medicine, peanut butter, water, and a dog cookie, McMuray said.

“Realizing we needed assistance, 911 non-emergency was called,” McMuray said.

Port Orchard police officer Bill Schaibly responded with a flexible stretcher. Oleyar and Schainbly carried the injured dog up the slippery ravine.

“Penny is almost fully recovered now, but for the lingering aroma of Blackjack Creek,” McMuray added. “She still awakens often during sleep to see if she is truly home.”
