Lakes reopen following dangerous algae bloom

The cyanobacteria warning for Long Lake in South Kitsap and the E. coli warning at Island Lake County Park have been lifted.

The Kitsap Public Health District issued the warnings July 10 due to an algae bloom in both Long Lake and Kitsap Lake. The toxic cyanobacteria can make people sick, and kill pets and fish.

The warning remains in effect for Kitsap Lake.

Island Lake beaches were closed on July 19 due to high levels of E. coli bacteria in the water. Follow-up tests have shown that E. coli levels are now back at a safe level for human contact. The lake was closed July 11-13 for the same reason.

Residents who live near lakes or visitors are encouraged to look for cyanobacteria blooms and contact Kitsap Public Health at 360-728-2235 when blooms are observed, or if they notice any of the following conditions:

  • Large numbers of dead fish in the lake.
  • Sudden or unexplained sickness or death of a pet cat or dog.
  • If someone has entered the water and experiences skin rash, dizziness or weakness, respiratory allergy, abdominal pain, diarrhea or vomiting.
