Kitsap transportation projects to receive federal funds

Kitsap County has been awarded nearly $4.5 million in grants from the federal Surface Transportation Program.

The grants, combined with other state, regional and local money, will fund several projects spanning the county from Port Orchard to Bainbridge Island.

About $735,000 will go to the city of Bainbidge Island for improvements to the bicycle paths from Winslow to Eagledale.

Another $1.07 million will go to the city of Poulsbo to go toward the Noll Road project.

A total of $1.99 million will be put aside for work on the Sound-to-Olympics Trail in Port Gamble. The project will have a 10-foot paved shared-use path, approximately 3.4 miles long, from the entrance of the Port Gamble Forest Heritage Park to the top of the ridgeline. This is the northern segment of what will eventually be a 14-mile trail from Port Gamble to Kingston. The whole project will connect to the southern segment that runs to Poulsbo and Bainbridge Island.

The biggest project in terms of dollars is $2.3 million for 2024 improvements to Fairgrounds Road NW in Central Kitsap. Six-foot sidewalks, 11-foot travel lanes and an eastbound bike lane will be constructed on both sides of Fairgrounds Road from Nels Nelson Road to Woodridge Lane. Lighting improvements will also be made. The aim of the project is to provide safer pedestrian and bike connections along Fairgrounds Road.

Other projects include $2.25 million to Kitsap Transit for engineering and design for the redevelopment of the Southworth Ferry Terminal in Port Orchard; $1.7 million to Kitsap Transit for a new park-and-ride facility near State Route 16 in Port Orchard; and $1.77 million to the city of Bremerton for the preservation of 6th Street and Naval Avenue.

Charlotte Garrido, chair of the county commissioners, said, “Improving safety, connectivity and public health in our communities is a priority.”
