KINGSTON— Authorities have released the name of the man killed in a car collision that occurred Thursday afternoon near the intersection of Bond Road and Highway 104. According to the Washington State Patrol, Duane F. Pape, 44, of Kingston was confirmed dead at the scene of the accident.

Two others involved were airlifted with serious and life-threatening injuries to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle; a third was transported to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton.

Washington State Patrol spokesperson Krista Hedstrom said the accident occurred on Hwy 104 near the Affordable Spare Room Storage just east of Gamble Bay Road; it occurred at roughly 2 p.m. and temporarily blocked traffic.

According to eyewitnesses, a silver 1992 Buick station wagon traveling west on Hwy 104 locked its brakes and turned — apparently for no reason — veering in front of an eastbound white 2004 Ford Econoline van.

The Buick’s passenger side was struck, killing Pape, who was the passenger in the front seat.

Both the driver and backseat passenger of the Buick sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center. The backseat passenger, a female, appeared not to have been wearing a seatbelt. Her injuries appeared life-threatening.

The driver of the van, a 32-year-old male from Renton, was transported to Harrison Medical Center with minor injuries.

Hedstrom said the Buick was bought within the last month. Both cars were totaled.

Along with the WSP, the state Department of Transportation Incident Response team and coroner responded to the accident.
