POULSBO — Kingston High School’s site project manager Don Brubeck warned the school board of directors that schedule back-ups may delay the school’s proposed opening in 2006.

Brubeck’s statements came at the Nov. 13 board meeting, after Director Catherine Ahl expressed a need to suspend projects and further funding until the board can meet Nov. 24 for a special study session intended to clarify the situation.

“If we’re shut down now, we can’t open the school in September 2006,” Brubeck cautioned. “You would need to delay it until 2007. This decision is schedule critical.”

Brubeck’s concerns come from the fact that Bassetti Architects, the firm he represents, has not been allowed to proceed with work after making adjustments to the “B.2” Kingston High School Site alternative. The other major site alternative, “C.2,” has also not been adjusted by the architectural firm.

NKSD Director of Capital Programs Robin Shoemaker said the NKSD Board of Directors needs to make some decisions with regard to funding.

“The schedule (for building the high school) is impacted,” Shoemaker said. “Can it recover? It depends on how quickly this decision making happens.”

One of the major decisions the board will have to make Nov. 24 will be whether or not to approve a $1.3 million increase in construction costs for the Kingston High School site. The money has been added to the costs of construction because the school district is now more accurately able to determine what costs will be, Shoemaker said.

“These costs are factored in, now that they’ve been able to refine the estimate,” Shoemaker said.

She said she is confident Bassetti Architects will be able to get their work done on time and that KHS will open on schedule.

“I believe (opening KHS) is still doable in 2006,” Shoemaker remarked. “(Brubeck) is reacting to the fact that since Oct. 9, (Bassetti) has only worked on the B.2 site.”

The school board of directors’ study session is at 9 a.m. Nov. 24 at NKSD’s Student Support Center.
