A Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) corrections sergeant sustained minor injuries Wednesday after being dragged by an ATV at the Kitsap County Fair & Stampede.

The KCSO corrections division handles vehicle parking during the Fair. Corrections officers facilitate parking on their own time and are not in uniform.

A corrections officer was using his personally owned quad ATV Wednesday night to transport supplies around the large parking area, according to KCSO. As he returned to an RV set up as the corrections officers’ command post, he inadvertently left the ATV in gear as he got off the vehicle. It began to lurch forward and the officer tried to regain control of the ATV, but it continued forward and hit a nearby corrections sergeant, according to KCSO.

The sergeant was dragged several feet before the officer could get the ATV stopped.

The corrections sergeant was taken to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton. She did not sustain any broken bones, but bruising was evident. The sergeant is sore and may miss a couple days of work, according to KCSO.

The incident appears to be an accident, but because it involved a mechanized vehicle and a person was injured, a KCSO traffic deputy is conducting an investigation.

Vehicle parking at the Fair is one of the KCSO corrections division’s primary fundraisers for the annual “Shop With A Cop” Christmas program for underprivileged children. Funds raised during the Fair go directly to the “Shop With A Cop” monetary gift cards for the children.
