If you need us, can we get to you?

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue

Our community was struck by three significant fires recently. In two of the incidents, the fires weren’t reported until the structures were well involved because the homes were tucked into places where they weren’t readily visible by neighbors. Water for firefighting in both incidents had to be supplied with tender trucks because neither neighborhood had nearby fire hydrants. This process was especially difficult because the homes were situated down long and narrow roadways. Can we get to your home? Find out before there’s an emergency. Call us at 360-297-3619 and we’d be happy to come out and take a look.

After-fire meeting

As we did with the fires on Marine View Drive and Sandy Beach Lane, we’ll be hosting a public meeting about the March 30 fire on Washington Boulevard. We’ll discuss the incident’s firefighting tactics as well as its special challenges; fire investigators will explain their process and present their preliminary findings on the blaze’s cause. Most importantly, we’ll share a range of ideas for improving your home’s fire safety. The meeting will be held at the Village Green Community Center on Monday, April 30 at

7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Kingston bike rodeo

We’re excited to be partnering once again with the Greater Kingston Kiwanis, the Village Green Community Center and the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office to bring a bike rodeo to Kingston on Sunday, May 6 from 1 p.m. to

4 p.m. at the community center. There is no cost for the event, and we’ll have trained personnel on scene to ensure that participants have properly fitted bike helmets. We’ll even bring a supply of brand new helmets for anyone who needs one. Donations of $8 each will be accepted but not required; the generous members of Kiwanis passed the hat at a recent meeting, raising enough cash to buy 37 helmets. We hope to see you at the rodeo.

(Almost) Summer Fest

Provided there are no emergency calls to take them away, a crew will be at the Kingston Cove (Almost) Summer Fest on May 12 at Port of Kingston Marina and Mike Wallace Park. From about 11 a.m. until about 3 p.m., personnel will be standing by the district’s fire-rescue vessel, Marine 81, to provide tours and answer questions. Stop by and get a Marine 81 trading card, too. At about

3 p.m., the crew plans to take the boat out into the cove for a demonstration. We’ll also have a limited supply of low-cost and custom-fit life jackets available.

Wildfire preparedness

Think it can’t happen here? Every year, we see more and more dangerous wildland fires around the communities west of the Cascades. May 5 is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. Take advantage of spring weather to take steps that could keep your home safe if a wildland fire strikes here. Get tips at www.firewise.org.
