Holidays: Better to give than to receive or take

It may be better to give than receive during the holiday season, but it’s also a popular time of the year to take.

From 2019-23, December proved one of the most popular months for burglaries. Last December, there were 23 burglaries per 100,000 residents compared to 20 per 100,000 in November – a rise of 15%. The FBI recorded 62,414 burglaries in November 2023 and 70,877 in December 2023 across the US, and figures are likely to be high this year.

The home warranty company Cinch Home Services offers advice to stay protected:

1. Use night lights and timer lights when you’re away. Program your lights to turn on in various rooms at different times to mimic regular activity.

2. Avoid advertising you’re going away. While sharing vacation photos or updates on social media can be tempting, it can also signal to others that your home is empty. Avoid posting details about your travel plans until after you’ve returned. Ensure your social media accounts are private so that only trusted friends and family can see your posts.

3, Install security systems. Smart cameras, motion sensors and alarms can be one of the most effective deterrents against break-ins. Modern security systems are much more affordable and easier to install than ever before.

4. Keep valuables out of sight and ensure windows are covered. To reduce the temptation for break-ins, keep valuables like electronics, jewelry or wrapped holiday presents out of view from windows. Close curtains or blinds before you leave.

5. Don’t leave spare keys outside. Although it may be convenient, hiding a spare key outside is risky as many are common spots that burglars often check. Instead, leave your spare key with a trusted neighbor or friend. Alternatively, consider installing a secure key lockbox with a code.
