The North Kitsap girls soccer team dominated Sequim 8-1 at home Nov. 6 in a district elimination match, led by senior midfielder Syleena Hogan’s hat trick.
The No. 4 seed Viking will now host No. 2 seed Fife Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. for a chance to advance to state. NK previously lost to No. 5 seed Port Angeles 1-0 Nov. 4 in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
“I think we did really well,” Viking defenseman Olivia Basco-Yu said. “We started pretty strong, and I’m not sure what changed between this game and a few games ago because a few games ago, we got pretty caught up in front of the goal.”
NK established scoring opportunities early on with midfielder Audrey Kozlowksi putting in a goal within the first five minutes of the match, giving the Vikings an early 1-0 lead.
The Vikings continued to build on their strong start with Hogan adding another goal to NK’s lead with 23 minutes remaining in the half and junior forward Lecy Russell pushing one in to give NK a 3-0 lead three minutes later.
Hogan added one more goal before halftime, giving the Vikings a 4-0 lead at halftime.
“We were just placing our shots really well,” NK coach Travis Rider said. “We were just creating chance after chance after chance, which was a lot of fun to watch.”
The second half proved to be more of the same for the Vikings, with Russell adding another goal ten minutes into the half.
Senior midfielder Addy Jueco pushed in another goal for NK after Sequim scored a goal shortly after the second Russell goal, giving NK a 5-1 lead.
Fellow senior midfielder Daisy Cleverdon put in another goal for the Vikings, not even two minutes after the Jueco goal, giving NK their fifth different goal scorer on the day.
Hogan capped off the scoring spree for the Vikings with one last goal with fifteen minutes remaining in the game, giving them an 8-1 lead and all but sealing the victory.
“We really didn’t expect that [to blow Sequim out],” Basco-Yu said. “But I guess once we started getting going, we connected better, and they got tired and [we] got more momentum throughout the game.”
