GoFundMe account set up for Simpson family, identified as fire victims

PORT ORCHARD — A GoFundMe account has been established to raise funds for the funeral expenses of four members of the Simpson family, who were identified as having died in a South Kitsap house fire Saturday morning (Oct. 14).

The GoFundMe account was set up by Port Orchard resident Martha Riley, who posted the information on the Port Orchard Facebook page Sunday, Oct. 15.

According to the post, the victims of the fire on the 3800 block of SE Castlewood Drive were Vili Simpson, wife of Don Simpson, who survived the blaze by escaping the burning residence shortly before South Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews arrived at 3:54 a.m. Simpson’s son, Merle, and his two children — a female toddler and an infant boy — died in the fire. The children’s names have not been publicly identified.

The son was identified in the Facebook post as being an employee of the South Kitsap School District’s maintenance and grounds department. The elder Simpson, believed to be in his 60s, was hospitalized and released later that day from Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton.

According to the GoFundMe account page the evening of Oct. 15, 44 people had donated $2,405 toward a goal of $10,000 in just four hours.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the names of the victims in the fire.
