PORT ORCHARD — Ready to fight your way out from under a winter’s collection of household odd and ends? Start your cleanup this month, because your city government is here to help the middle of next month.
The City of Port Orchard’s 2019 Spring Clean Up week takes place the week of May 20-24 within the boundaries of the city.
The cleanup week is the first of two scheduled this calendar year in Port Orchard. The second will take place this fall.
During the week, city residents are provided a means to have extra yard waste, recycling, household items and assorted waste disposed of. According to waste disposal company Waste Management and the city, some items set out will be picked up free of charge, while others require a small fee.
Some of those items must be paid for in advance through the treasurer’s office at City Hall. No loose debris will be picked up. Extra household trash, recycling and yard waste will be collected at no extra charge as long as it’s contained.
All items must be placed at the street curb next to residential garbage bins on their regularly scheduled pickup day.
The city said items on private property will not be carried away. There is no charge for collecting and disposing of most smaller items, but they must be boxed, bagged, bundled or easily handled. The total volume of the collection must fit into space 4 feet by 4 feet wide and 4 feet high.
Items that don’t comply with city requirements will not be picked up (and won’t be allowed to remain on the property or street).
In order to participate in the clean-up week, residents must live within Port Orchard city limits. City officials said items will be picked up on residents’ regularly scheduled garbage collection day. Crews will not backtrack for items that were not placed out at the proper time, according to organizers.
All items must be paid for prior to the day of pick-up at the treasurer’s office at City Hall.
White goods such as stoves, washers, dryers, refrigerators and freezers can be picked up during clean-up week.
For a fee, the city crew will haul appliances for recycling. Fees for white goods must be paid prior to the day of the pick-up in the treasurer’s office.
The city will take these paid items to the recycling site. Appliances must be placed at the curb next to the garbage bin.
During clean-up week, extra yard waste that has been boxed, bagged or bundled and fits into a space no larger than 4-by-4 feet wide and 4 feet high or less will be picked up. Branches must be cut down to 6-foot lengths and bundled. Any yard waste must be bagged.
Items excluded from the clean-up week include hazardous waste; construction/demolition debris; roofing materials; carpets; vinyl; tile; cabinets; oil or paint cans; batteries; tires; car parts; boats; fluorescent lights; motorcycles; wood-burning stoves; large satellite dishes; firewood or construction wood; and plate glass.
Kitsap County residents may bring hazardous products to the Kitsap County Moderate Risk Waste Collection Facility for proper handling.
There is no charge for residential disposal. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Saturday. Business customers must call for an appointment at 360-337-5777 or visit www.kitsap gov.com/sw.

Items picked up free of charge include dismantled baby cribs, high chairs and strollers; barbecues with no propane tank; baseboard heater; bicycle; coffee or end table; computer monitors/CPU; countertop; dresser; electric fan; small electric space heater; file cabinet; furniture made of wood, fiberboard or plastic; garbage disposal; lawn table; lawn chair; lawn mower (oil and gas must be drained); Masonite; medicine cabinet; small rugs (no rolls of carpeting); stereo; plastic and folded swimming pool; disassembled and bundled swing set; home gym equipment; tube-type televisions 30 inches or less; vacuum cleaner; VCR or DVD players; collapsible wheelchair; and yard toys and chain link/wire fencing that has been rolled and secured.
