Four injured in multi-vehicle crash on State Route 16

A driver was cited for speeding after a multi-vehicle collision Sept. 23 on State Route 16 near the State Highway 166 exchange — two miles west of Port Orchard.

It was a long afternoon for drivers on State Route 16 earlier this week.

A driver was cited for speeding after a multi-vehicle collision Sept. 23 on State Route 16 near the State Highway 166 exchange — two miles west of Port Orchard.

The collision occurred about 1:57 p.m. in the westbound lane of SR 16, according to a Washington State Patrol report.

WSP reported that a white 2002 Peterbuilt dump truck, driven by a 45-year-old Port Orchard man, failed to slow down for traffic and struck the rear of a blue 2014 Nissan Versa coupe, driven by a 59-year-old Port Orchard woman.

The collision caused a chain reaction involving four other vehicles — 2007 Chrysler Pacifica, 2003 Saturn Vue, 2007 Chrysler Sebring sedan and 2004 Honda Civic sedan.

A passenger in the Versa suffered injuries and was transported to Harrison Medical Center by South Kitsap Fire and Rescue emergency crews.

SKFR Battalion Chief Jeff Faucett said emergency crews arrived at the scene about 2:07 p.m. and it took about 15 minutes to extract two people from the Versa.

Faucett said three other people were treated and transported to area hospitals. He said none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening. The female driver of the Versa was sent to Harrison and two others — a 50-year-old Port Orchard woman driving the Pacifica and a 44-year-old Poulsbo woman in the Vue— were taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Gig Harbor.

The drivers of the Sebring and Civic were not injured. Both cars were driven away from the scene.

Faucett said when SKFR crews arrived at the scene they found multiple cars blocking the westbound lanes on Highway 16 near the Highway 166 overpass. He noted the traffic jam caused a delay for several units responding to the collision.

He said a total of 16 SKFR personnel responded, along with an engine and ladder truck, two aid units and three medic units.

There were no hazards at this incident, Faucett reported.

Traffic on SR 16 was blocked for more than an hour, closing the Tremont and Sedgwick westbound exits. Backups extended past the Mullenix exit. One lane was later opened until both lanes were cleared about 4:30 p.m., according to WSP.

About 15 minutes after the collision, an SUV lost control coming off the eastbound Wollochet Drive exit and hit a semi-trailer in the eastbound lane of SR 16 in Gig Harbor, reported KOMONews.com.

KOMO reported the driver of the SUV failed to make the turn on the onramp from Wollochet to eastbound SR-16 and caused the crash after hitting a semi-trailer.

The semi-trailer overturned and its load of topsoil spilled across the highway.

The driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
