First plantings, walking path installed at Buck Lake Native Plant Garden in Hansville

After more than a year of design and ground preparations, the first plantings at the Buck Lake Native Plant Garden have been installed.

Initial plantings include a birch grove, snowberries, vine maples and flowering currants placed at the north and south entrances to the one-plus acre garden west of the play fields.

Previous work included sculpting the site into a series of berms and “rooms” to display the plant varieties, and installation of an irrigation system.

Visitors at the county park will now find a welcoming pathway winding through the garden by which to inspect the progress of the project as it evolves.

The garden is a project of dedicated local volunteers including landscape designers and Master Gardeners whose goal is to educate the public on the potential for native plants in home landscape planning.

Funds donated through the Hansville Community Club are matched in part by the club to help support the project.

Progress photos can be found on the garden Web site: www.BuckLakeNativePlants.org.

Anyone interested can sign up for an online newsletter and receive notices for “planting parties.”
