North Kitsap Fire & Rescue and Poulsbo Fire Department will be hosting community gatherings this week to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks that took place Sept. 11, 2001. The commemorative gathering will provide an opportunity to honor the victims of the tragedy, including fire service, law enforcement, civilians and families of those who were lost, as well as the three attack sites, the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa.

NKF&R officials and crew members will be hosting a breakfast for the community between 7-10 a.m. Sept. 11. at the station’s headquarters on Miller Bay Road.

Officials said they hope to establish a new tradition by honoring those lost during the event by taking positive action in their memories. This year, the goal is to generate support for the newly-formed North Kitsap Boys & Girls Club committee by taking donations for the club’s operations.

“We’re hoping to see lots of neighbors coming together and getting to know one another in support of our community and its kids,” said NKF&R Fire Chief Paul Nichol.

Besides meeting firefighters, citizens will be able to visit with Blaze, the department’s fire dog and take tours of the fire station.

PFD will also recognize the event by holding a flag-raising ceremony on the same morning. Members of PFD, the community and other emergency service providers will assemble at the flag pole in the front of the PFD’s headquarters on Liberty Road.

There will be two assemblies. The first will occur at 6:30 a.m. and PFD crew members will raise the flag shortly after.

A PFD Chaplain will then give a brief invocation and a moment of silence will be observed at 6:59 a.m. in remembrance of the collapse of the World Trade Center’s South Tower (9:59 EST). After the moment of silence, coffee and pastries will be served at the station.
