The requirement to increase funding to public education follows the Supreme Court’s McCleary decision mandating full funding for education by 2018. On Jan. 5, 2012, the Supreme Court upheld a trial court’s ruling that the state has not made ample provision for educating all children in Washington. The court ruled “the State must amply provide for the education of all Washington children as the State’s first and highest priority before any other state programs or operations.”
To meet that obligation, the state must increase education funding by billions of dollars by 2018, including increasing state funding per student to school districts to at least $9,710.
The regular session is scheduled to end April 28 provided budgets are adopted.
