District 23: Appleton ready for 2 more years

Sherry Appleton has won another term representing Washington’s 23rd Legislative District, which includes the north part of Kitsap County. The incumbent had 25,843 votes as of 8:45 p.m. Tuesday. Appleton’s opponent, Poulsbo mayor Becky Erickson, trailed with 17,093 votes.

Appleton said the initial nervousness she felt earlier in the day had subsided.

“I feel good,” she said. “In every elected’s life, there comes a time when you think you’re going to win and you don’t,” Appleton said. “I just wanted to make sure that it wasn’t this time.”

When asked how she felt about another two years in the seat, Appleton pointed to her previous work as representative for the 23rd.

“I’ve done a lot of good work for my constituents, and this gives me two more years to continue on that path,” she said.

“It was no surprise whatsoever,” said Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson on Nov. 7 in response to Appleton’s win.

Stating that she only spent $876 on her run against Appleton, Erickson said she viewed her support by 39.6 percent of voters (as of Nov. 7) as a good indicator for future opportunities.

“I think that everybody that knows me knows that I don’t quit,” Erickson said. “I don’t stop, especially when it’s concerning the wellbeing of my home and my community. We’ll just see what unfolds the next couple of years.”

Proposition to expand the Port of Poulsbo

Port of Poulsbo’s Proposition One sought to expand the boundaries of the port district to include the entirety of the port’s downtown Poulsbo marina, the Poulsbo Yacht Club and the Liberty Bay Marina. The intent of the expansion, port commissioners said, was to ensure that individuals who claim permanent residences on their boats — outside of the existing boundaries — would be given a voting voice in port matters.

That proposition failed, with 15 (40.5 percent) voting in favor and 22 (59.5 percent) voting against the expansion.
