County lifts recreational fires ban

PORT ORCHARD — The prohibition on recreational fires has been lifted.

Fires in approved locations and in appliances can resume immediately.

“Cooler weather, shorter days and a more fall-like weather forecasts allows us to lift the recreational fire ban,” said David Lynam, the county’s fire marshal. “Fire danger is still precarious, and caution is still the name of the game.”

A Phase 1 burn ban remains in effect. Officials expect it will remain in effect until rain arrives in the fall.

A Phase 1 ban limits outdoor burning to recreational campfires and approved locations and devices. Backyard burning and burning for purposes of clearing land are prohibited, according to the county.

Recreational fires must be three feet or less in size and contained within a designated fire pit and fed with only charcoal or dry firewood (no milled lumber). All fires must be constantly attended until completely extinguished, and there must also be at least one piece of on-site fire-extinguishing equipment while the fire is burning.

The Phase 1 ban went into effect July 12.
