Construction to close bridge at night

The Agate Pass Bridge will be closed to all traffic between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, from March 4 until March 29, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Traffic will be pared to one lane for the two hours before and after each closure. Both lanes will be open to all traffic on Fridays and Saturdays and between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. during the rest of the week.

Workers will repair damage that occurred last April when a commercial truck carrying a construction crane struck the bridge. The driver, who at the time was traveling north on state Route 305, failed to notice the crane protruding upward behind his truck. Witnesses said the crane hit the stoplight at Day Road moments before crashing into the bridge and becoming lodged in the superstructure.

WSDOT spokesperson Kelly Stowe said the nature of the work requires that the bridge be closed at least part of the time. Emergency vehicles will be allowed to cross as needed. Pedestrians will not be allowed to cross during construction.
