Fatal accident

One person is dead and another is in custody following a single-vehicle accident on Highway 16 Nov. 7.

Officials said that around 9:15 a.m. a work van was westbound between Sedgwick and Mullenix roads when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The van rolled onto the median and hit a tree before coming to a stop. Eyewitness video shows the wrecked van stopped just a few feet from eastbound traffic.

Police arrested the driver for suspicion of driving under the influence, while the passenger died. Neither was wearing a seatbelt, state trooper Katherine Weatherwax said.

Traffic slowly opened back up after three hours.
