A 45-year-old Belfair man was arrested for vehicular assault Sunday following a multi-vehicle accident on State-Route 3 near the Bremerton National Airport, the Washington State Patrol reported.

Trooper Krista Hedstrom said that the suspect was arrested Feb. 8 following the collision that injured four people, two Silverdale residents and two from Belfair.

The accident occurred at 2:55 p.m. Sunday, Hedstrom said, when the suspect was headed south on SR-3 in a 1983 GMC Jimmy and his vehicle crossed the centerline, hitting two vehicles headed northbound.

The first vehicle struck was driven by a 70-year-old Belfair man driving a 1997 Buick LeSabre who was reportedly injured, but declined treatment. His passenger, a 75-year-old Belfair woman, suffered head and neck injuries and was transported to Harrison Hospital.

The second vehicle struck was a 2007 Toyota Prius driven by a 59-year-old Silverdale man, who was transported to Madigan Hospital with unknown injuries. His passenger, a 65-year-old Silverdale woman, suffered a broken leg and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.

The suspect was also transported to Harrison Hospital with chest and internal injuries. Once he was released, Hedstrom said he was arrested.

“A trooper followed him to the hospital to ask him more questions about the collision,” she said, explaining that following accidents involving serious injuries, officers with drug-recognition training are dispatched to interview the driver at fault.

Hedstrom said investigators believe the suspect was not drunk, but that “he was under the influence of something.” She said blood was drawn from the suspect and the WSP is awaiting toxicology results.

He was booked into Kitsap County Jail for vehicular assault and was held initially under $250,000 bail. He was scheduled to appear in Kitsap County Superior Court Monday afternoon.
