A field of flags for Veterans Day at Ivy Green Cemetery

BREMERTON — On Nov. 5-6, over 100 volunteers participated in the cleanup and identifcation of the gravesites for more than 560 veterans in Ivy Green Cemetery, Bremerton.

Flags were placed on all of the graves in honor of Veterans Day and to mark their location for the Wreaths Across America Program on Dec. 17, said Marion Hersey, who coordinated the event. Hersey is a memorial preservationist and flag chairman for the John Paul Jones chapter of the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

During the clean-up, gravesites were identified for one Medal of Honor recipient, one Silver Star recipient and four Bronze Star recipients, Hersey said.

Among those who participated were crewmembers from the USS John C. Stennis and USS Nimitz; members of the John Paul Jones chapter of the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and the Navy Wives Club; members of the Peace Lutheran Church Cub Scout Pack and Star of the Sea American Heritage Girls; and volunteers from the city.
