73-foot fishing boat drifts, beaches in Apple Tree Cove

KINGSTON — Approximately 250 gallons of fuel were removed Dec. 12 from a vessel that broke away from its anchor chain, drifted ashore and beached in Apple Tree Cove.

Port of Kingston Executive Director Jim Pivarnik said the boat is a 73-foot wooden fishing boat built in 1911. It had been anchored in the cove; port employees arriving for work at 6 a.m. Dec. 11 saw it on the beach on its side.

“When the tide came in, the boat filled with water,” Pivarnik said. The Department of Ecology boomed around the boat and removed fuel from the vessel. Pivarnik said it appears no fuel escaped into the water.

Pivarnik said the boat’s owner was trying to pump water and right the boat.
