It’s tea time in Kingston | This ‘N’ That | May

One can always tell spring is here by the hustle and bustle of the Sunshine women of Kingston’s Redeemer United Methodist Church. The planning of the annual tea for the church and community is always a big event. This year it has been decided that another fashion show would be great fun, since it really seems to be a favorite entertainment for women.

Carol Moser and Jan Richards will be chairing this year’s event. Harriet Muhrlein is heading up the menu and food preparation committee — and of course that’s where I will be, inhaling the calories. Volunteers will help in set up, serving, taking down and cleaning up. Wonderful volunteers help in preparing the food dishes. The date is set for May 14, at 2 p.m. This is an opportunity to bring a daughter, granddaughter or a gal pal for a great together afternoon. Or, if alone, one of our hostesses will seat you with a nice group that you will enjoy getting acquainted with.

The chair duo has contacted several stores in the Silverdale Mall for the clothing to be modeled by Redeemer ladies, and children of different ages. Stores selected are C. J. Banks, for women’s apparel and Macy’s for children’s stylish clothing. We do appreciate their participation in helping the ladies put on the tea and entertainment. This will be the first time children will have a part in one of the fashion shows. I’m looking forward to it, especially with smaller tykes strutting their stuff. You never know how they will perform.

Tickets will be $10. Of course an extra donation is never turned down as any money left after expenses  goes into community needs, such as the Kingston Food Bank. For tickets and information call Jan at 297-8683 or Carol at 297-5101. There will be no tickets sold at the door, so please get them early. The church’s address is 9900 Shorty Campbell Road, just off State Route 104 and Parcells Road.

With times such as they are today and the debates that abound, it reminds me of something one of our most celebrated presidents once said:

“I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country… corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working on the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.”

How right he was for his time and also it rings true in what is happening today.  Who is the quotation from?  None other than President Abraham Lincoln, on Nov. 21, 1864. The Bible speaks of there being nothing new under the sun as it has all been done before. The rich and the poor will be forever with us. The very wealthy want the middle income to shoulder the responsibility of paying the bills of the nation while they grow richer on the backs of labor and tax cuts.  It is ever thus. I think it’s time to turn this idiotic, misplaced practice around and get them out of our congressional pockets.

Taking  collective bargaining rights away only benefits the wealthy of big business and robs the man in the street from trying to make a decent living to care for his family. There has to be another way of conducting business for the good of all or we are going to go down the tubes for sure.

As Lincoln also said, “a house divided against itself cannot stand.”
