SEED project is a boondoggle that must be killed

I don’t know about you, but I’m fed up with the idea of the Port of Bremerton’s Sustainable Energy and Economic Development (SEED) program.

Commissioners Bill Mahan and Cheryl Kincer seem to think this pipe dream of theirs is the greatest idea and investment for the taxpayers since the new Bremerton Marina (which, to date, has been a complete failure).

Berk & Associates, a Seattle-based consulting firm, called SEED a “very risky venture.”

And it is.

SEED is a gamble that will end up costing the taxpayers tens of millions of dollars over the years.

Call the port at (360) 674-2381 and ask interim CEO Tim Thomson what SEED is going to cost the residents of Kitsap County.

Even better, attend a port meeting at start asking questions about SEED.

You really need to get involved and put a stop to this colossal waste of time and money.

In 2008, Kincer and Mahan outvoted Commissioner Larry Stokes and accepted a $2.8 million grant the from the U.S. Department of Economic Development to help fund SEED. First of all, federal money isn’t just something that falls from the sky and says, “Take me. Spend me.”

It’s tax money — our tax money — that we all paid out, and it shouldn’t be wasted on something that will never happen.

Secondly, the port can only accept the money if agrees to fund a 100 percent match.

Care to guess where the matching funds will come from? That’s right, they’re going to sell new bonds that we’ll all be paying pack through our property taxes.

This commitment that Mahan and Kincer made is wrong. You and I should have been given a chance to vote on this mega-project.

Of course, if you trust Mahan and Kincer, then you won’t mind keeping your property taxes at the same inflated level or higher instead of the reduction we could have seen if it hadn’t been for SEED.
