It’s 2 a.m. and you just finished swinging the graveyard shift at work. You want to hit the gym before you hit the sack, but everything is closed.

Snap Fitness in East Bremerton opened Thursday, Dec. 27 and now provides night owls with an opportunity to lift weights into the wee hours of the morning.

Brad and his wife Linda Petersen recently jumped on board the Snap Fitness franchise and opened a workout facility across from Fred Meyer in East Bremerton. Brad Petersen used to own various Austin Chase Coffee houses and Subway restaurants in the county and decided it was time for a change.

Petersen said he was tired of loading people’s sandwiches with extra cheese and lots of mayonnaise, so he decided to open a gym.

“Now I feel passionate about getting people on board with weight control and health,” he said.

Snap Fitness is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The facility is staffed at various hours throughout the week, but gym members can swipe their membership cards at the door and work out in the facility any time, day or night.

“After hours you just swipe your card to get in. Everyone loves that idea,” said Carmel Wieland, Snap Fitness’ personal trainer.

There is a sensor directly inside the gym’s front door and the lights will turn on whenever someone enters the facility during non-staffed hours, according to Wieland.

“Everything is sensored,” she said. “If you walk in at 1, 2 in the morning the lights will turn on.”

There are emergency buttons throughout the gym that are hooked to a security system. If a gym patron feels threatened by anything, he or she can push a button on the wall or a button on a necklace that people can wear to call security and get assistance.

“It’s all video monitored,” Wieland said. “Even the parking lot’s monitored 24/7.”

Snap Fitness is offering free enrollment or a free week pass through the third week of January. The free pass can only be used during staffed hours.

Wieland also will do a free body composition analysis during Snap Fitness’ first few weeks in business. If people decide to join Snap Fitness, she is available during staffed hours to set up individual workout plans and work with gym patrons.

“One of the things that helps people obtain their goals is having a personal trainer,” Petersen said. “So we offer a personal trainer here and she is an avenue for which they can obtain their weight loss and fitness level goals.”

Snap Fitness has top-of-the-line equipment including treadmills, elliptical machines, strength training equipment and free weights. Snap Fitness also offers tanning. The facility has a stand-up 48-bulb tanning bed available to gym members.

One unique piece of equipment that can be found at Snap Fitness is a Woodway treadmill. The Woodway can easily accommodate heavier individuals and feels similar to running or walking on grass, according to Wieland.

“No one has one in the county,” Petersen said. “The Woodway has the rubber tracks on it so it’s much easier on the joints and lower body.”

Wieland said she plans to show every Snap Fitness patron how to properly use each and every piece of equipment that can be found in the gym.

“That’s something I plan to do, show them how everything works and how to safely use everything,” she said.

Snap Fitness and Emerald City Smoothie are joining forces to bring a healthy message to the area. The gym is located right next door to Emerald City Smoothie’s East Bremerton location. If smoothie customers upgrade to a mondo-sized smoothie they will receive a free week pass to Snap Fitness while supplies last.

“Proper nutrition and diet and exercise all go together,” said Emerald City Smoothie co-owner John Madding.

Madding and his wife, Marleen, plan to join Snap Fitness and meet their personal fitness goals.

“We’re going to support this gym and try to meet our own personal goals as well,” he said.

Petersen said he hopes to open more Snap Fitness locations throughout the county and spread the message of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“I don’t think that I can do just one,” he said.
