The death toll from the Ebola virus numbered 4,447 as of Oct. 14, according to the World Health Organization. Students at North Kitsap High School are doing what they can to help West Africa fight the virus. A donation drive will take place at the high school Oct. 13-24 for Children of the Nations, a nonprofit based in Silverdale.

A project that began 13 years ago is expected to be completed in 2017. The culvert under West Kingston Road will be removed. It will improve the flow of water within the Carpenter Creek estuary. It is the second of two culverts identified in 2001 that members of Stillwaters Environmental Center wanted to see replaced.

The three juveniles arrested for witness harassment and intimidation were found guilty by the juvenile division of the Kitsap County Prosecutor’s Office. The juveniles were found guilty of attempted intimidation of a witness, according to Timothy Drury, chief of the juvenile division. The juveniles were arrested Sept. 9 at Kingston High School during the investigation into alleged threats of violence against the high school. Matthew Smiley, a former student, is charged with making the threats.

A former Kingston High School student was charged in District Court on Sept. 8 with felony harassment for making threats to “shoot up” the school. Matthew Allen Smiley, 18, was arrested the morning of Sept. 5 at his Kingston home. He was arrested for felony harassment and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. He was formally charged in District Court with “felony harassment for making threats to kill.”
