Tis the season, the campaign season, that is. Practically overnight a forest of brightly colored, cleverly-scripted campaign signs have sprung up along roadways, at street corners and in the landscaped medians running between the lanes of travel. Anywhere people have a tendency to congregate in a public environment, th
It began with the lowest of lows June 28 after finding out the Warren Avenue Pee Wee Clubhouse had been broken into and more than $800 of fireworks needed for fundraising were stolen.
Like everyone else, the Smidt family has been cutting back on some of the luxuries we indulge in to save money. So in the spirit of the fictitious Griswold family trip to Wally World in the 1983 film “National Lampoon’s Vacation,” we decided that this year’s family vacation will not involve boarding a plane at SeaTac but instead involve loading up the vehicles and hitting the road.
These are powerful words put to paper by men who considered themselves to be quite ordinary for their time. But whom we, later grateful generations of United States citizens, find to be beyond extraordinary and exceptional for what they eventually accomplished. Men, who by signing the document that contained these
“School’s out for summer.” Those wonderful words were forever immortalized in song by the heavy metal poet Alice Cooper in 1972. It’s a song that has gone on to become a June anthem for generations of kids, its lyrics blasting in the background as the sudden rush to freedom pushes young bodies on a collision course through the proverbial institutional doors to smack head on into summer and its long days of endless possibilities spread before them like an all you can eat buffet. At this moment September is just a very small spot on the distant fall horizon that can be easily ignored.
State of Washington, County of Kitsap, summons to jury duty, for Colleen Smidt. Yep, when sorting through my mail last week, there it was. Jury duty.
Now that we are in the month that signals the year as half over already (big groan) I thought I would take the opportunity to update you on some of the things that have occurred regarding several of my past published columns.
Naval Base Kitsap Pass and ID was featured in my May 21 column “Challenges of an average civilian in a military community.” The bad news was the potential emergency I talked about happening in my column actually did occur. The transmission went out on my best

Burning the candle at both ends for too long only makes you sick. How do I know? I made myself sick.
Not just a little sick, the pneumonia kind of sick. It is not a fun place to be. Being this sick also limits the fun activities one usually experiences to write about and pretty much dampens even the smallest amount of creativity that can be summoned up for story contemplation.
In my humble opinion, Sunday only kicks off the Mother’s Day Season. Never heard of the Mother’s Day Season? Well, that is the other 364 days of the year. Mother’s Day is a 24/7, 365-day-a-year job for the rest of your life. It is rewarding and heartbreaking. It is joyful and sad. At times it makes you want to be a better person and other times it turns you into a crazed raving lunatic. Just ask my husband, Jason.
No, not the type of parking that involves your car. The sunny day, green grass, sitting on the blanket, watching the kids play, eating sandwiches and fruit kind of park. Bremerton has some great neighborhood recreational areas for exactly this type of activity and most are a whole lot closer than you think. Many of my fellow city residents tend to leave the flashy downtown water features for the visitors, tourists and only occasionally visit these areas during the really hot weather months.
I took a deep breath as a parent and enrolled my son in kindergarten in the Bremerton School District. That was in 2006. He is now in his last year at Naval Avenue Elementary (Go Dolphins!). Naval Avenue is the only school in the district that is pre-kindergarden through third grade.
I do challenge this group to continue their momentum and expand beyond just the issue of urban chickens. Bremerton is currently facing some significant budget shortfalls and cut backs in the months ahead. Let us resolve the urban chicken issue once and for all.
Ah, springtime in Bremerton. My favorite time of year. The days are longer, the ground is dryer and the sun is warm upon your face when you turn it up toward the sky. The sounds of lawnmowers and weed eaters are the instruments on which the weekend symphonies are played by many a resident throughout every neighborhood in town.

In the past couple of years our neighborhood has seen a significant increase in the amount of street fighting, property damage and late night noise-making activity perpetrated by a particular type of local gang. This gang has no regard for private property. They will spend entire nights going where they choose, taking what they want and attacking any innocents they find along the way.
As many of us rush about conducting the daily business of living our lives, we allow so much of what…
