Proud of our boys of summer

Two times in two years to compete in something that many consider a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity might be a bit much for any adult to handle. But members of the group of athletes that is undertaking this awesome feat just started shaving and others recently got their first drivers licenses.

The North Kitsap 16-year-old Babe Ruth team took the field at the World Series in Monticello, Ark. yesterday, entering a level of competition that rivals any professional game.

Unlike the pros, these players haven’t had the perks of personal trainers, multi-million dollar contracts and their faces on everything from T-shirts to boxes of Wheaties. They’re not famous (yet) and when they return home next week, they’ll have less than a month to enjoy the remainder of their summer before heading back to high school.

They’re everyday kids with extraordinary talents.

Those who have seen them in action will likely agree. Their opponents will definitely agree.

They took to the diamond yesterday and will do so again today, showing the talent, heart and drive that brought them to the World Series to begin with. Unlike the 2004 run, NK has a unique perspective. They’ve “been there,” but they haven’t “done that.”

This will serve as an advantage as they face off against the world’s best. We have no doubts they will do North Kitsap proud on this elevated stage.

They already have and deserve nothing but our fullest support as a community as they hit, run, catch, dive and slide their way toward the championship next week.

Best of luck to the team and our deepest thanks to their coaches, parents and fans who take the time and effort to support these kids as they take a swing at achieving their dreams.
